Digital Crafts: Customised Bricks 1.2 (2016WS)
After the Part-to-Whole approach of the Winter School 2016: Customised Brick 1.1, we have the
Whole-to-Part approach in Customised Bricks 1.2.
The second approach is based on funicular structure which allows construction without scaffolding.
A minimum geometric guide is used. Here the focus is on the form finding and not the modules,
and hence the amount of customisation is minimized in the individual masonry blocks.
The goal of the exercise is to evolve a new, contextual parametric process where the design can be
executed with an efficient integration of machinery and the knowledge of local craftspeople. The
workshops are a part of a continuous evolving process where the learnings are a contribution to
the evolution of computational design and digital fabrication in India and similar contexts
across the globe.
